Beautiful surroundings with superb ocean views
Exclusive to The Gambia Experience in the UK market, White Horse Residence boasts tropical, perfectly kept gardens which surround the guest rooms, dining area and pool, trailing off towards the deserted, sandy beach in the distance. The views from this property really are second to none, perhaps most alluring at sunset, best enjoyed from the gardens.
The Residence itself was built in 2004, and converted by German owner Peter ten years later into a small boutique hotel, styled on a traditional African Lodge and located to the south of the main resort areas. Its idyllic, elevated location overlooking the Atlantic Ocean makes it an ideal choice for a romantic getaway. The homely feel and personal touches are the main charm of this property, and although Peter is no longer at the property we are sure you will find a friendly welcome from the new owners and their Gambian staff, who are sure to make your stay a memorable one.
The eight guest rooms can be found dotted in pairs throughout the gardens and in the main building, and although not air-conditioned, they remain cool due to their high ceilings and rotunda style. In 2016, a self-contained 2-bedroom lodge was added, ideal for a family or group of friends, although no children under the age of 12 are permitted. As an eco-friendly property, water is heated using solar power.
An inviting pool and restaurant area both offer wonderful vistas towards the wide, unspoilt beach, and upon first entering the African-inspired reception area, you’re immediately drawn through to the inviting terrace area beyond.
Light lunches and dinner are available at White Horse; although an informal affair, all meals are freshly prepared and served with a smile, with dishes chosen from a three-course table d’hote menu, using many local ingredients including freshly caught fish from Tanji. Holidays are sold on bed & breakfast, although you are likely to take most of your meals in the hotel due to its location away from main resort areas.
Spend time on the beach or beyond
The unspoilt beach below can be reached after a five-minute walk of approximately 250m along an uneven track – here you will find a local beach bar and very little else, with sand stretching as far as the eye can see in both directions, only interrupted by the odd fisherman and the birdlife The Gambia is famous for.
A variety of excursions can be arranged from this property for an additional charge, using the hotel’s own vehicles, boats and guides. Bicycles are also available for the more adventurous, and provide a perfect way to explore the endless stretches of sand. If relaxation is what you prefer, a massage or manicure can be arranged in the small, open-air beauty parlour.
Although there will be no representative visiting the property and our standard excursion programme will not apply, you will be well looked after by your host and local activities can be booked directly with the property.
