Introduce your children to the thrills of African wildlife with a family safari in Kenya. Your family will experience the African wilderness on trips to the semi-arid Laikipia Plateau and the Masai Mara National Reserve. You’ll be tucking into breakfast with the long-necked residents of Giraffe Manor and meeting orphaned elephant and cheeky chimpanzee at nearby sanctuaries. A visit to a traditional Maasai village helps the appreciation of Kenyan tribal life and, of course, no safari trip is complete without African game drives, and everyone will have the chance to see Africa’s Big Five.
DAY 1
UK - Nairobi
Flying from London to Nairobi, you'll be driven by private car to the leafy suburb of Langata. Here you can settle into Giraffe Manor where you’ll be introduced to the other rather long-necked guests.
DAY 2
Nairobi
There are few places in the world where you’ll be greeted at breakfast by a giraffe poking its head through the window. This is one of them! Expect regular encounters with the giraffe who reside in the adjacent sanctuary. At Nairobi’s David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust elephant orphanage, you’ll see baby elephant being hand fed by their keepers.
DAY 3
Nairobi - Laikipia
Fly northwest to the sprawling foothills of Mount Kenya where the groundbreaking wildlife reserve of Ol Pejeta Conservancy can be found. Famed as a sanctuary for rhinoceros, Ol Pejeta is home to three of only five northern white rhino surviving today. It also protects over 100 rare black rhino. The rest of Africa’s Big Five – lion, leopard, elephant and buffalo – also reside here.
DAYS 4 - 5
Laikipia
With expert-guided game drives in open safari vehicles, you’ll have two days to explore this expansive reserve. Chances are you'll spot some of the six resident lion prides. Some of our closest relatives also await you at Sweetwaters Chimpanzee Sanctuary. And if you're very lucky, leopard or African wild dog will reveal themselves. Head out on an intrepid evening drive and experience the thrill of Laikipia’s nocturnal wildlife: keep your eyes peeled for aardvark and porcupine.
DAY 6
Laikipia - Masai Mara
A short morning flight will take you to the Masai Mara National Reserve. A diverse and captivating savannah, the Mara is perfect for a first-time family safari in Kenya. If you missed the Big Five in Ol Pejeta, you’ll have good chance to tick them off here. You’ll stay in tented riverside pavilions in a private concession alongside the reserve. This offers more intimate wildlife encounters with fewer tourists.
DAYS 7 - 8
Masai Mara
Over the next two days, thrilling game drives are available. You may see cheetah peering over termite mounds as herds of wildebeest snake across the plains. Your children can hone their bush craft skills, absorbing the lore of the land as they learn to identify animal tracks. In the nearby village, you’ll meet Maasai families, discovering more about their traditional ways of life.
DAY 9
Masai Mara - Nairobi - UK
Tough though it may be, it’s time to tear yourself away from the sights, scents and sounds of Kenya. Saying goodbye, you’ll return to Nairobi, before catching an overnight flight back to the UK.
