Arrangements were made with the Shanghai Commercial and Savings Bank's tourism bureau to create Tian Hsyang Lodge, which laid the foundation for growth in tourism in the Taroko region.
Construction was completed in 1961 and managed by an organization known as the Spirit Encouragement Society. In 1964 Jiang Kai Shek visited Tian Hsyang Lodge and in the following years of 1966 and 1967, his son Jiang Jin Guo accompanied the Korean president Park Chung-hee and Japanese Prime Minister Nobusuke Kishi to Tian Hsyang Lodge, establishing it as a place for high officials and dignitaries.
In 1991, Formosa International Hotels Corporation stepped in and brought Tian Hsyang Lodge to new heights by bringing it under its Grand Formosa Taroko name. Placing it on an international platform under the new name of Grand Formosa Taroko, it became the obvious choice for local and foreign travelers as well as high profile figures that visited Taroko National Park. In 2009, Grand Formosa Taroko once again underwent a re-vamping as it became the Formosa International Hotels Corporation's “Silks Hotel” brand, being renamed as Silks Place Taroko. The hotel underwent a complete facelift with comprehensive upgrades in facilities and services to cater to the world's elites.
